Appeasing Putin
Trump appears to have kept his
promise to stop the war between the victim of aggression, Ukraine, and the
aggressor, Russia, which annexed part of Ukrainian territory. The key is not
simply to stop it, but to formalize its outcome with a peace treaty between the
victim and the aggressor, a more accurate term for which is appeasement.
Something similar has already happened once, known as Chamberlain's
appeasement, when he ceded Czechoslovakia in the hopes of preventing war. It's
a shame that Franklin Roosevelt didn't think to do the same in 1941-1942. He
had the potential to negotiate peace with the fascist Hitler, ceding Europe,
thereby saving millions of lives, not counting Jews and Poles. Trump, in his
peacemaking efforts, is similarly willing to cede Ukraine for the sake of peace
and the Nobel Prize, ignoring Putin's assertion that the Ukrainian people as
such do not exist.
Incidentally, Armenia and Azerbaijan
also signed an agreement in 1994, not for peace, but for a ceasefire. This was
temporary, and thus fundamentally different from the agreement proposed by
Trump after his meeting with the fascist Putin in Alaska. (1, 2)
