A sought-after liar for the State of Israel

A sought-after liar for the State of Israel

"Something is rotten in the Danish state."

                                   W. Shakespeare, "Hamlet"

The president is a rapist, one prime minister has been murdered, another is under investigation, and some ministers and members of parliament are traditionally imprisoned for fraud. For Shakespeare's Danish state, this is more than a bit extreme, but, as you might guess, for the Jewish state of Israel, it's probably the norm. And the fact that the current prime minister, as revealed in a frank conversation between Presidents Obama and Sarkozy, is a liar (http://newsru.com/world/08Nov2011/liar.html), would seem a mere trifle in terms of criminality compared to the aforementioned examples of lawbreaking, especially by the legislators themselves, so to speak, the chosen ones of the Jewish people, were it not for the category of lies. Yes, the American and French presidents called Netanyahu a liar, of course, referring to his political activities, and here, as we know, lies can cause far more harm, more than the lies of the world-famous financial liar Bernard Madoff. For example, George W. Bush's lie about Saddam Hussein possessing weapons of mass destruction cost both Iraq and America enormous losses, and I'm sure the consequences and costs of this lie will increase exponentially.

In calling Netanyahu a liar, Sarkozy and Obama were undoubtedly primarily based on the Israeli prime minister's attitude toward the peace process. The fact is that Netanyahu's assurances of a desire to achieve peace through the "two-state solution" are in no way consistent with his decision to build housing estates exclusively for Jews in the occupied territories. Excuse me, but who would be foolish enough to build a house on someone else's land, which they plan to hand over to its owner? There's only one conclusion to be drawn: Netanyahu has no intention of vacating the land for a Palestinian state. And the fact that, thanks to a technical error by a telecommunications operator, the world learned of Obama and Sarkozy's assessment of the Israeli Prime Minister as a liar only revealed the truth that Hamas leaders have long been declaring. This truth is that no negotiations with Israel will lead to anything, and only through armed struggle can the Palestinians end the occupation. It is precisely this understanding by Palestinians of this truth that underlies the growing popularity of Hamas among them, as the only political force, ignoring which is as futile as denying the Palestinians' desire for freedom.

In this whole matter of such a "flattering" epithet directed at Netanyahu, I find the moral and legal aspects more interesting and important. An insult has been inflicted—that's a fact. This insult was directed not just at a private individual, but at the Prime Minister of the State of Israel, the chosen one of the Jewish people. It would seem that not only Netanyahu himself, but also the press, and ultimately, the entire country, should be outraged and demand an explanation on behalf of their leader. Yet, strangely, there was no reaction from the Israeli side. The explanation for this circumstance seems to lie in one thing: that Netanyahu is, in fact, a liar. After all, if Netanyahu were to demand specific clarifications from Sarkozy and Obama, as is usually the case in cases of slander, which is a criminal offense, then the investigation would inevitably reveal that Sarkozy and Obama were right to call the Israeli Prime Minister a liar. I don't believe the insult was intentional, but it's certainly possible that the peace process's founders intended it to convey to Netanyahu that there's a limit to all lies, that the occupation and the ongoing construction of Jewish settlements on Palestinian territory are putting an end to the peace process, which has long since ceased to be peaceful, and would more appropriately be described as a process of permanent, low-intensity war.

In nature, as well as in society, nothing happens without a reason, and if we're talking about a liar of national significance, I'll allow myself to philosophize. Once, on the eve of the Israeli parliamentary elections, in an article titled "When Conscience Is Silent" (1), I naively urged: "Before casting your vote, look into the eyes of your chosen one, lest you elect to parliament the most deceitful person in all of Israel, who will not fail to deceive you again. Don't act rashly; don't compromise with your conscience."

However, the people of Israel chose precisely such a man as their leader, and now I understand why. The fact is that, driven by the desire to somehow resist international pressure to resolve the Palestinian issue, which will inevitably result in the creation of a Palestinian state—an outcome that is completely alien to the majority of Jews—Israel needs a leader capable of deceiving all the advocates of the peace process, especially its guardian, and, if possible, the entire international community. Netanyahu was nominated for this role of liar. One cannot help but recall the incontrovertible truth: every nation gets the leader it deserves.

There is only one thing that was overlooked in this choice: the liar ultimately suffers the most from lies. The outcome of such a search for salvation in lies is one—the path to oblivion (2).
